Grape: Chenin Blanc

Did you know?

Chenin Blanc originated in France’s Loire Valley and is one of the most versatile white grape varieties. It’s used to produce a wide range of wine styles—from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, and even sparkling wines!

It’s also known as Steen in South Africa, where it’s the most widely planted white grape.

Chenin Blanc’s Global Resurgence:

This grape is enjoying a global comeback. Plantings are increasing in the Loire Valley, and a revival is underway in California and Washington State.

Thanks to its adaptability to warmer climates, Chenin Blanc has become a favorite among winemakers and adventurous wine lovers. Other innovative whites like White Malbec from Argentina and White Pinot Noir from Oregon are also gaining attention.

Flavor:

The taste of Chenin Blanc can vary greatly depending on where and how it’s made.

You might notice notes of green apple, pear, pineapple, white peach, honey, floral aromas, and sometimes a minerally finish.

Taste: Ranges from crisp and dry to richly sweet, usually with vibrant acidity that allows for great aging potential.
