What Are the Origins of Toasting?

Toasting…is it really related to a slice of toast? Maitre de Vin has gathered four stories behind its origin. Which version do you believe most?

The 4 beliefs of “Toasting”

1) To complete the five senses

Drinking already involves sight, smell, taste, and touch — but no sound.

Clinking glasses adds that final sense.

2) To scare away evil spirits

In the Middle Ages, people believed the sound of clinking glasses could drive away evil. Some would even laugh or shout to keep spirits away.

3) To prevent poisoning

One theory says people would clink glasses hard enough for wine to spill into each other’s cups. If everyone still drank, it meant the wine was safe.

4) To make wine smoother

In the 17th century, people placed toasted bread into wine. It helped reduce harsh flavors and improve the taste.

Therefore, at gatherings, people would take turns drinking in honor of someone. The person who got the wine-soaked toast was the most honored.
